Scholarships
Students in the Graduate Program in Biotechnology may be eligible for scholarships granted by funding bodies such as CNPq, CAPES, and FUNCAP. The scholarships will be allocated to students who express interest by filling out the form during the periods announced by the Program Coordination. Scholarships will be awarded according to the following criteria:
Initial implementation of the grants
1. Scholarships should be prioritized for graduate students without an employment contract who are exclusively dedicated to their studies. Alternatively, scholarships should be awarded to graduate students with an employment contract who are officially released from their professional activities and do not receive a salary.
2. Scholarships will be awarded to new students according to their ranking in the course selection process, and then the criteria required by the funding agencies will be considered. In the event of similar classification positions, the following criteria will be given preference for the grant, in descending order: being awarded a scientific initiation grant; working as a teacher for the longest period of time; and holding a master’s, resident, or specialist degree. If there is still a tie, the course board will decide by roll-call vote. If the number of eligible students exceeds the number of scholarships available, they will be placed on a ranking list. This list will be used if an opportunity arises to reallocate a scholarship.
3. Priority will be given to graduate students who have benefited from affirmative action policies and/or are socially vulnerable.
4. According to Instruction ad referendum 01/CPPG/CEPE of September 20, 2023, the accumulation of scholarships should only be considered once the distribution of scholarships to the students listed in item 1 has been finalized.15/03/2024 16:03 SEI/UFC – 4858516 – Portaria https://sei.ufc.br/sei/controlador.php?acao=documento_imprimir_web&acao_origem=arvore_visualizar&id_documento=5285841&infra_sistema=1… 2/3
Accumulation of grants
Consider accumulation with other activities or scholarships when there are available or unimplemented scholarships. Implementation must follow these priority criteria in order:
1. Students who have benefited from Affirmative Action Policies, as regulated in the PPGB selection notice upon entry;
2. Students with the highest level of socioeconomic vulnerability or the lowest socioeconomic status.
3. Teachers or other basic education professionals linked to the municipal, state, or federal public education system.
4. A professional working in a municipal, state, or federal public service.
5. Professionals working in the private sector, provided their activities are related to the subject of the postgraduate research.
6. The professional with the lowest monthly income among the scholarship applicants.
7. Professionals with the lowest workload.
8. A student regularly enrolled in postgraduate studies developing a research, development, and innovation project associated with their core activities, whose scholarship is linked to the project carried out and supported by the Informatics Law, the Good Law, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice, or a related entity.
Duration of the grant
1. The number of months of the grant must be consistent with the master’s student’s regular enrollment period, i.e., up to 24 months of regular enrollment in the program, which is not extendable.
2. Scholarships will be awarded for up to 24 months from the start of the first academic term of the program.
3. For the purposes of counting the duration of the scholarship, scholarship installments received by the student from another postgraduate program within the same modality from any funding agency will also be taken into account.
4. Students will be guaranteed scholarships during periods in which they are treating serious or incapacitating illnesses or caring for newborns or newly adopted children. In these cases, the terms of master’s scholarships may be extended for up to 30 months, as defined above, provided this is authorized by the funding agency.
5. To authorize payment of the scholarship during the leave period mentioned above, the scholarship holder must provide the program with documentation proving the illness (UFC’s Coordination of Expertise and Assistance to Servants — CPASE) or the birth or adoption of the child.
6. The scholarship will end when proof of dissertation defense is submitted.
7. The scholarship duration for students with accumulation with other activities may vary from six to 24 months depending on the presence or absence of students without scholarships.
Cancellation of the grant
The program may cancel a student’s scholarship if any of the following occurs:
1. The student wishes to cancel the scholarship in writing.
2. Failure to comply with the program’s rules regarding academic performance, e.g., earning an average below 7.0.
3. Failure to meet the deadlines for submitting the scholarship report.
4. Situations that result in students without a scholarship (who are regularly enrolled, do not have an employment relationship, and have satisfactory academic performance) and students with an employment relationship who receive both a scholarship and a salary. In these cases, the scholarships of students with jobs will be canceled according to need, starting with those who have received them the longest.
5. Proven abandonment of research activities by the scholarship holder without presenting a reason to the advisor and the program coordinator. In this case, it is up to the advisor to notify the program of the abandonment, providing written proof (e-mails and other messages).
6. Failure to comply with the program’s rules regarding meeting deadlines (English proficiency test, qualifications, and dissertation work schedule).
7. All scholarship cancellations must be approved by the program collegiate body.
