The admission of students to the Graduate Program

The admission of students to the Graduate Program in Biotechnology takes place through a selection process governed by a specific public notice. The selection takes place every six months and is organized by the Program Coordination. The number of vacancies varies each semester. Graduates or undergraduates in Biotechnology or similar areas can participate in the selection. The selection process for admission to the Graduate Program in Physics (PPGFis), academic master’s and doctorate modalities, is governed by Resolution No. 14 / CEPE of October 2013.

The selection process is carried out in three stages. At each stage of the selection process, and for each modality, there is a specific Selection Committee, appointed by the Graduate Program in Biotechnology collegiate. The selection commissions are constituted as follows: 03 professors in the 1st stage, 03 professors in the 2nd stage and 03 professors in the 3rd stage.

The following is a more specific description of the steps in the selection process.

1st stage: research project evaluation (eliminatory)

The project evaluation is an eliminatory stage in which each member of the examining committee assigns a score ranging from 0.0 to 10.0. An average score of 7.0 is the minimum required for a candidate to pass this stage. Only candidates who pass this stage will advance to the next one.

2nd stage: research project defense (eliminatory)

The second stage of the selection process is eliminatory and classificatory. It consists of a presentation and defense of the research project, which is submitted upon registration and in accordance with the rules described in the specific notice. Candidates have a maximum of 15 minutes to present and defend their research project. The score for this stage is the arithmetic average of the marks awarded by each member of the Selection Committee. A candidate with a score of 7.0 or higher is considered to have passed this stage.

3rd stage: – Evaluation of curriculum vitae (classificatory)

Curriculum Vitae Evaluation (Score 0 to 10): This stage is purely classificatory and consists of evaluating the candidate’s curriculum vitae and supporting documentation, which must be submitted with the application. The score is assigned according to the criteria published in the specific notice.

Affirmative policies

According to Resolution 10/CEPE of July 11, 2023, which establishes affirmative action policy for graduate programs, 30% of the positions in the Biotechnology Graduate Program will be allocated to affirmative action quotas.

  1. These places will be allocated to Black people, Indigenous people, quilombolas, and people with disabilities. These groups will compete against each other, and the places will not be separated by group. Furthermore, candidates must self-declare at the time of registration to be considered for these vacancies.

  2. Candidates who have not opted for affirmative action and those who have must complete all stages of the selection process outlined in this notice.

  3. If there are not enough approved Black, Indigenous, Quilombola, or disabled candidates to fill the vacancies reserved for the affirmative action quotas described above, the remaining vacancies will be redistributed to the general competition. They will be filled by other approved candidates in the order of their ranking within the chosen subject area at the time of registration.

  4. People with disabilities are defined as those who fit the typology described in Law No. 13,146 of July 6, 2015 (Statute of People with Disabilities), as well as Decrees No. 3,298 of December 20, 1999, and Number. 5,296 of December 2, 2004, from the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic. The Accessibility Department will define the requirements for proving disabilities and the appropriate accessibility conditions based on the Federal University of Ceará’s accessibility policies and regulations.

  5. People with disabilities must prove their condition with medical reports submitted at registration and may undergo a medical examination at the Federal University of Ceará.

  6. Indigenous people will be those who declare themselves as such and present a copy of the Administrative Register of Births and Deaths of Indigenous People (RANI), or a declaration of belonging signed by a duly legitimized local ethnic leader and issued by the indigenous group, when registering for the graduate program selection processes.

  7. Quilombolas will be considered as such if they declare their identity and present a declaration issued by their group and signed by a duly legitimized local ethnic leader when registering for the graduate program selection processes.

  8. Those who self-identify as Black or Brown when registering for the graduate program will be considered as such, according to the color or race questionnaire used by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

  9. In the event of a formal complaint with supporting evidence of suspected false self-declaration, the Heteroidentification Commission of the Federal University of Ceará will be consulted and will issue a conclusive opinion, which will be considered decisive for the analysis of the administrative act.

  10. Any vacancies not filled through affirmative action quotas will be redistributed to the general public within the subject area chosen at registration. If a Black, Brown, Indigenous, Quilombola, or Disabled candidate who has been approved for a reserved place withdraws, the vacancy will be filled by the Black (Black or Brown), Indigenous, Quilombola, or Disabled candidate who was immediately classified in the same subject area.

  11. In the event of unfilled vacancies, these may be reallocated between subject areas. Call-ups of successful and unsuccessful candidates depend on the lecturer’s interest and availability, with the graduate program Coordination’s agreement, observing the candidates’ ranking order by subject area.
